5 Signs You Might Need to Replace Your Dentures

Dentures are a highly advantageous form of tooth replacement. Despite their many perks, though, they do have some downsides. For example, they typically need to be replaced every 5 – 7 years or so. How can you tell if your denture is nearing the end of its lifespan and you should ask your dentist about getting a new one? Here are five signs to look for:

Your Dentures Feel Loose

After the extraction of your natural teeth, your jawbone began to slowly change shape. That process can go on for years, and it can affect the way your dentures fit and feel. Your dentist can periodically reline (adjust) your prosthetic so it stays snug and comfortable for as long as possible. However, you will eventually come to the point where relining your dentures is no longer a viable way to make them fit securely. You will need to start the process of getting a new set of prosthetic teeth.

Your Dentures Are No Longer Comfortable

After you get used to your dentures, you should be able to wear them all day without any significant discomfort. On the other hand, if you start to find that your prosthetic is causing pain and contributing to gum sores, you should certainly see your dentist. It is possible that your dentures are damaged or that their fit has changed so much that they can no longer work well for you.

It Is Difficult to Eat and Speak

Following an initial adjustment period, it should be a breeze for you to eat a wide range of foods and speak with confidence while wearing your dentures. However, if they often slip out of place, you are using more adhesive than you used to in order to keep them from destabilizing, or your speech has changed, you should consult with your dentist to find out if it is time to get a new prosthetic.

There are Visible Signs of Damage or Discoloration

A damaged denture may harm your gums and other oral tissues, while a significantly discolored denture might negatively affect your confidence. Do not try to fix such issues on your own; DIY repairs frequently lead to worse damage. Your dentist might be able to repair the issue, but you should also be mentally prepared for the possibility that you will need completely new dentures.

You Are Ready for an Upgrade

Even if your current dentures are still functional, you may still decide to replace them with a stabler, sturdier option. You might be a candidate for implant dentures, which are secured in the mouth via prosthetic tooth roots (dental implants). Implant dentures last longer, feel more natural, and provide a stronger bite than their traditional counterparts.

Should you replace your dentures? Your dentist will be happy to let you know if it is time to invest in an upgrade for your smile.
