Have a Dental Emergency? Here’s What to Expect During Your Visit
August 6, 2024
When an oral emergency strikes, you need to know who you’re going to call. In these unexpected situations, it’s a good idea to have the phone number of a nearby emergency dentist on hand that you trust to ensure you receive the care you need. From there, the next step will be your emergency appointment. Learn what you can expect during this appointment by reading below.
1. Get Examined & Receive a Diagnosis
Once you call your emergency dentist in Torrance and schedule your appointment, the next step will be getting to the office. As soon as you arrive, the dentist, hygienist, and assistant will work together to capture necessary X-rays and other diagnostic images as well as gather your medical and oral health histories.
After reviewing the X-rays, the emergency dentist will then examine the affected area of your mouth and ask you about the symptoms you’re experiencing. Based on all of the information they’ve gathered, the dentist will then diagnose the issue that’s causing your discomfort, sensitivity, or other symptoms.
2. Receive a Treatment Plan
Once a diagnosis has been made, the emergency dentist can then go on to develop a plan to address the issue. In some cases, like those involving toothaches, a root canal may be necessary, while others may need a dental filling, crown, or other treatment. The dentist will walk you through each of your options so you know what to expect, and the front desk staff will provide you with a detailed cost estimate to help you make the best decision for your budget.
3. Get Relief from Your Pain
If you’re experiencing severe oral pain, the emergency dental team may also provide you with sedation or a local anesthetic before your examination or treatment. In some cases, like when an infection is present, antibiotics may also be provided.
4. Undergo/Schedule Your Treatment
Finally, the last step is to either move forward with your treatment immediately or to schedule a date for your procedure. The front desk staff will work directly with you to find the best time and date to plan your appointment. Or, if the service can be provided the same day, your dental team may jump into action handling the issue immediately.
