Nightguards for Bruxism

Bruxism is the dental term for chronic teeth grinding and clenching. This oral health disorder can occur for many reasons, but most patients grind their teeth during sleep. While some patients only experience bruxism during times of stress, others experience nearly constant grinding and clenching while sleeping. For these patients, a custom-crafted mouthguard will place a physical barrier between the teeth, preventing wear or damage caused by excess pressure.

Nightguards for TMJ Disorder

The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect the jaw to the skull. When they function properly, the mouth opens and closes without pain. Damage or strain to these fragile joints can make even the smallest facial movements painful. Speaking, chewing, yawning, and even sharing a smile can be excruciating.

Many cases of TMJ dysfunction are linked to chronic bruxism. Excessive jaw movement leads to strain that damages the TMJ. Many patients who suffer from TMJ dysfunction and/or bruxism can be treated using a mouthguard. The nightguards crafted to treat TMJ dysfunction are customized to adjust the position of the jaw at rest. This stops the unconscious movement of the mouth at nighttime, relieves strain on the joints, and realigns the proper jaw placement. Over several weeks of nightly wear, TMJ dysfunction sufferers should experience a dramatic improvement in their comfort and mobility.
